At Surf Sweets, we’re proud of the fact that we use no artificial colors in our products. Natural alternatives, like black carrot juice, provide a safe alternative to dyes like red 40, while giving our candies a deliciously natural red hue.
Artificial colors on the other hand, are primarily made from coal-tar derivatives. And as unappetizing as that sounds, there’s a much larger issue at stake. A recent study by British medical journal The Lancet, showed that artificial colors and preservatives increased hyperactivity and decreased attention span in a wide range of children.
Studies like this have inspired a number of food and candy manufacturers in Europe to remove artificial colors, flavors and preservatives from their products. Closer to home, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently issued a paper which suggested removing artificial colors and preservatives from the diets of children experiencing ADHD behaviors.
